An appreciation for the past and a commitment to the future - that
best describes the cultural life of Claiborne County and Port Gibson.
A variety of groups and organizations are each doing their part
to see that the very best of Claiborne County's heritage is passed
along to future generations.
As a site on the National Register of Historic Places, the people
of Port Gibson believe that preserving the past is an important
challenge. Over the last decade, numerous restoration projects have
returned many historic structures to the original grandeur. Further
efforts to renew the downtown area through Port Gibson's Main Street
Program has not only revitalized economic life but ushered in a
renaissance of cultural appreciation based on the area's rich past.
The people of Port Gibson are also focused on the future. None
better illustrates this commitment than Cultural Crossroads, an
organization dedicated to helping children in Port Gibson appreciate
their community through storytelling, folk arts and theater. Quilting
plays an important role in Cultural Crossroads' mission. The Crossroads
Quilters, primarily African-American women, are passing on this
important art to younger women while receiving recognition nationally
for their own work.
